With the fall and winter months quickly approaching, Delaware homeowners should be inspecting their sheds. After a particularly rainy season, like we’ve had in Delaware, sheds can be more susceptible to damage. Sheds from Space Makers are highly durable and built with premium materials, but conducting regular inspections will extend the lifespan of the structure. Check out some essential shed condition inspections to complete before the end of the season, both inside and out.
Interior Inspections
Inspect the Walls and Floors .jpg)
Checking the walls, floors, and ceilings for leaks and cracks is one of the most important inspections to do on your shed. Our sheds are made with premium materials, but will face some natural wear and tear over time. Check the shed for any signs of dampness, rot, or damage. If you see any damp spots on the ceiling, that means the roof may have cracks or holes that are causing leaks and need to be repaired. Any cracks or holes on the inside of your shed mean that outdoor elements like rainwater and pests can get inside. Address all issues immediately, so they don’t turn into bigger problems in the future, and will prevent the growth of mold and mildew.
Check for Pests
Look for any evidence of pests; you’ll most likely see nests or droppings. We use pressure-treated materials to deter pests, but sometimes they’ll make their way inside. Many pests, especially mice, can fit through small spaces. Seal any entry points, like cracks and holes in the walls, doors, and windows, to ensure they don’t get into your shed. We recommend clearing away any overgrown vegetation on the perimeter of your shed as well, since pests will like to hide there. If you notice an infestation in your shed, contact a pest control specialist.
Reorganize Your Belongings
Take an inventory of everything you have in your shed. Declutter any items you don’t need, then check to make sure your desired tools and equipment are working properly and don’t need repairs or replacements. You may also want or need to use different tools for different Delaware seasons. Reorganize your shed to make sure the tools you’ll need are readily available. If everything is already organized to your liking, just make sure all your equipment is clean for the upcoming season.
Check Your Electric
If you have electricity in your shed, check any electrical systems for loose or damaged wires, broken outlets, and broken electrical boxes. Electrical damage can be very dangerous and should be addressed immediately to ensure the shed is safe. We find it best to have a professional electrician come out and repair your shed’s electricity to ensure it is up to code.
Exterior Inspections
Inspect the Roof
Your shed’s roof is likely to get the most amount of damage, especially due to Delaware's weather conditions. Check for damage and debris on the roof, and remove anything that shouldn’t be there. If you find damp spots when inspecting the inside of the shed, then there may be leaks or cracks in the roof that need to be repaired. Look for any broken or missing shingles, which will need to be replaced immediately to ensure no other leaks occur. You should also check the gutters for any clogs of mud or leaves so water drains properly. If your shed doesn’t have gutters, we recommend installing them.
Inspect the Siding
Check the siding panels for any warping, rotting, or cracking. If there are any loose panels, make sure they are fastened securely. If panels are missing or damaged, replace them. Check the exterior for any cracks or holes in the siding. These gaps can cause moisture to get into the shed, leading to mold growth. Repair these cracks with caulk. Last thing you’ll need to do is clean the siding using soap and water or a pressure washer on a low setting.
Inspect Doors & Windows
Make sure the shed’s doors and windows open and close properly. They should also be sealed to be weathertight so drafts or moisture don’t get into the shed. Use caulk to repair any gaps you see. If needed, we’ve found that using weatherstripping on the windows and doors will further seal them. When inspecting the doors, check the hinges and locks. Lubricate any squeaky hinges with WD-40 lubricant to keep them functional. Make sure the locks still work for proper security.
