Sheds from Space Makers are constructed with durable materials designed to withstand the weight of heavy equipment placed inside. All of our sheds are built with a sturdy floor, offering many benefits for your storage solution. Some Delaware homeowners may think that their shed would not need a floor, but we recommend having one for its moisture protection, durability, and versatility. Below, we’ll explain all the reasons why you should buy a shed with a floor to make your structure last longer.
Don’t All Sheds Have Floors?
While most sheds come with a floor, some homeowners may decide to build a shed without one. Some people may think that since they only need to store a few things, like a lawn mower or a tractor, that a floor wouldn’t be necessary. However, if you’re putting your shed on the ground, it can cause moisture damage and structural issues in the long run. A shed should, at the very least, have a solid foundation, like concrete, for the floor, but we find it best to have a floor built in to make it more durable and extend its longevity.
1. Protects Against Moisture
A shed floor creates a barrier between your shed and the ground. We use pressure-treated materials for our floors to minimize moisture damage to the structure. It will keep the items inside the shed safe from being damaged or rusting, which is especially beneficial for the tools and electric equipment you’re storing. To prevent moisture buildup on the floor itself, the shed should also be raised on a proper foundation so water drains properly. Having a floor will make the shed resistant to rot, prevent mold and mildew growth, and minimize the damage from weather elements, ultimately extending the life of the shed.
2. Deters Pests
Similar to moisture protection, a shed floor provides a barrier for your shed so pests can’t get inside. Pests like rats, termites, insects, and other critters like to make a home out of your shed, especially in Delaware winters when they’re seeking shelter from the cold. These pests can ruin the structure if they get inside, so having a durable floor will make it more difficult to do so. We build our sheds with pest-resistant materials to deter them from making their way inside and prevent structural damage from occurring.
3. Makes the Structure Stronger
A shed floor protects your investment by providing the stability the structure needs. Having one is necessary to support the heavy weight of your items, like lawn mowers, generators, furniture, equipment, and more. It will help the structure maintain its structural integrity over time, making it more durable. We highly recommend having a solid foundation under the floor, so the shed won’t shift or sink into uneven ground.
4. Adds Versatility
Floors offer more flexibility, allowing you to convert the shed into a workshop, home office, art studio, or whatever you need. You’ll be able to make the shed a more finished and functional space. You can install finished flooring like vinyl, carpet, linoleum, or hardwood for a more stylish and comfortable look. Having both the standard shed floor and the finished flooring material installed can support the heavy furniture you need for your functional space.
5. Easier Organization.jpg)
A shed floor will provide a flat, solid surface to make it easier to add shelves, workbenches, and boxes to organize your belongings. We’ve found that a durable floor makes it easy to organize your tools, equipment, outdoor furniture, holiday decorations, and more without worrying about the structural integrity of the shed. The sturdy floor will be able to safely hold all the additional storage features you want in the shed. It will also keep the interior clean as there won’t be as much dirt and grass inside the shed like you would have if it didn’t have a floor.
